Researchers define Domestic violence "as physical, or sexual violence within a family; and is often perpetrated against women yet, the children can be effected the most"(Krugetal, qtd. In Timur,Sahin,Ergin, Taspinar, Balkaya, Cubukcu,2010)Research proves that many women have been sexually abused, and many children are predicted to become violent due to domestic violence. Eight in ten people in America know someone that goes through domestic violence (Rainbow House, 2011).
Different types of effects on children are presented. Children who become victims of domestic violence endure suffering through psychological damage (Hurley and Jeff qtd. In fisher). Some immediate and short term effects on children are "Withdrawal, Depression, Abnormal Fears, Regression, Learning problems or decline in school performance, Truancy, Bullying or tendency to become a victim, Difficulty in building or maintaining relationships, Impulsiveness, Behavioral and Emotional problems, Denial or obsessive retelling of the incident, and symptoms of full-blown post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) similar to those found in combat veterans."(Fisher). Some symptoms are frequent nightmares, flashbacks, and serious emotional and behavioral problems (Kaplan, Kendricks,Black &blizzard, qtd. In Fisher)
